On the final ballot!

Feb. 22nd, 2008 | 10:44 am

I am on the 2007 Nebulas final ballot!

Congratulations to everyone (me included) and a special congrats to [info]deliasherman, whose story, "The Fiddler of Bayou Teche," from the same anthology, Coyote Road, is also on the ballot.

I need a new dress....

It's funny, I just finished reading "The Evolution of Trickster Stories Among the Dogs Of North Park After the Change" this morning. I have to say, the nomination is definitely deserved.

I went back and read your comments. Thanks for your kind words. It is a disturbing story and it makes me cryand I'm even the one who write it. It brings up so many things for so many people. Another big question in the story, though I don't know how many people think about this: What happens when the "people" from abused or exploited or marginalized classes (immigrants, slaves, women) stand up and ask for equal rights? What are the implications?

Do you mean you sifted back until you found the entry? If so, sorry! I was going to find that for you when I was feeling a little less slothful.

Oh, I definitely think that those questions are evident in the story. The way people reacted to the dogs, the way the dogs congregated at certain parks and by being at those parks made them taboo for regular people to go. Augh, those poor dogs. I really wanted to know what was going to happen, the way you want to know what's going to happen when you read interesting history.

(Note: I'm from Southern California, so immigration is sort of a touchy subject. "We're in the problem we're in partly because there are so many people working under the table, so many illegals who don't and can't pay taxes," is an opinion I often hear.)

Immigration is a touchy subject everywhere, though I'm sure you're right that it's hardest in the SW, and maybe NYC or something. Even in northern Wisconsin, where my folks live.

I feel so sorry for the dogs, too; though they still have packs in the Changed world, so they still have their fundamental social structure; the packs are likely to be dogs instead of people. I cry every time I read the story out loud. It's a challenge to get through the last three pages.
